"Epidemiological spatial analysis of animal health problems"

Dirk Pfeiffer (Royal Veterinary College and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine )

Synopsis: Spatial data analysis involves the use of visualization, exploration and modelling techniques. This framework will be used to present examples of epidemiological investigations in animal health.

"Visualizing geographic information: advances and challenges"

Jason Dykes and David Mountain (City University )

Synopsis: Examples of recent advances in visualizing geographic information will be presented. These include highly interactive software for analysing enumerated area data such as those contained in the UK Census of population, techniques for combining qualitative and quantitative data collected in the field and software for visualizing terrain models. New methods for analysing geographic information from a number of sources will be also be demonstrated. These include ways of representing, interacting with and synthesizing geographic information using dynamic graphics and a means of combining information from disparate sources using the Internet. Some of the research issues associated with visualization will be addressed with particular reference to new sources of spatial data that are enabling us to graphically represent and analyse information about the population in some detail.
