University of Padua (Padova), Italy

The University of Padua (Padova) was established in 1222 and has most famously been host to the lectures of Galileo Galilei. During Mussolini’s rule in Italy, the university was a centre of resistance. Today it is considered Italy’s best large university.

Padua has a population of 220,000 people and claims to be the oldest city in northern Italy. It used to be a medieval city-state and hosts Italy’s second oldest university. Under an hour away from both Venice and Verona, Padua is distinct in style with many medieval marketplaces, Fascist-era facades and a hip student population. It features a dense network of arcaded streets and many bridges crossing the Bacchiglione river.
