The collaborative research project called LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) uses extraordinarily sensitive measuring devices to detect the tiny waves. Researchers at the University of Glasgow's Institute for Gravitational Research (IGR) have developed new materials, fabrics, wires and sapphire "test masses" that are at the heart of these wave detectors, and this Science Showcase displays and explains the materials science at the heart of this enormous international project.
