Study Visits
It is now possible to 'sign up' for the study visits outlined below. Please contact Tilly Wright to do so. Please bear in mind that numbers are restricted, so register early to avoid disappointment.
The study visits are happening on the first day of the conference, 1 September 2009, starting at 13.45.
1. ‘The Clyde Waterfront’
This study visit will provide an opportunity to see at first hand this major regeneration initiative which spans along the banks of the river Clyde from the City Centre to Dumbarton. It will include a number of major projects including the Glasgow Harbour and Pacific Quay projects which are breathing new life into the once derelict sites following the decline of the ship building and closure of the riverside grain stores. It is replacing them with new housing developments, office accommodation, commercial and retail space, along with the state of the art multi media BBC head quarters and the new Transport Museum.
Most of the study visit will take place by Rigid Inflatable Boat travelling down the River Clyde itself from Glasgow Green to Renfrew. Participants will require to have enough agility to board and are recommended to wear warm clothes. Safety equipment and waterproofs (if necessary) will be supplied. http://www.seaforce.co.uk/?ID=powerboat_rides
2. 'Community Regeneration'
This tour will visit a cross section of housing regeneration areas at differing stages of evolution. These include the Crown Street project, an exemplar mixed housing tenure initiative in the New Gorals area and Castlemilk, a peripheral housing estate area, now a decade on since it was the focus for significant investment designed to tackle high levels of deprivation and poor quality housing. This visit will also include the North Toryglen ‘Transformational Regeneration Area’, which is one of eight GHA / GCC joint priority project areas which are at an early stage of development.
Visits 1 and 2 are led jointly by staff from Glasgow City Council Development Regeneration Services and by Glasgow Housing Association, and will be by coach departing from the Mitchell Library (conference venue). We are very grateful to Glasgow City Council and to Glasgow Housing Association for hosting these visits
3. ‘City Centre Urban Design and Development’ (walking tour)
This tour focuses on design and development in the central area of Glasgow. It will show and explain the historical development of central Glasgow as it grew westwards from its origin at Glasgow Cross, taking in the first (Merchant City) and second (Blythswood) "new towns" and the emergence of the Glasgow grid. It will also show and explain the various phases of development and of architectural design over the past 200 years, focusing in particular on the past 25 years and providing an insight into future plans for the city centre and the waterfront.
Visit 3 is led by Dr. Steve Tiesdell, University of Glasgow, Department of Urban Studies. This tour will involve taking a short train journey from the conference centre to the start at High Street and involve approx 5km/ 3 miles walking, including some hills, returning to the conference venue on foot.
