Getting Ahead of the Games in Glasgow

Replacement of Getting Ahead of the Games in Glasgow conference with free seminars!!

The above event scheduled for October 22nd and 23rd  has been cancelled due to insufficient registrations. In its place we plan instead  to run a series of free seminars. These are designed to facilitate debate and discussion on the implications of the evidence on major sporting events for the legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The first will take place on Friday October 23rd and will feature presentations from:

  • Dr Gerry McCartney  (MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit) ‘The impact of major sports events on the health (and determinants of health) of the host population’
  • Professor Mike Weed (Canterbury Christ Church University), ‘Using Sport Events to Raise Participation in Physical Activity and Sport – The Demonstration Effect and the Festival Effect’
  • Rita Ralston (Manchester Metropolitan University) ‘Harnessing the volunteering legacy of Glasgow 2014: Lessons from Manchester 2002’

We are still working on the organisational arrangements for this free event, but it is likely to take place in the middle part of the day on October 23rd. Please contact Annette Hastings A.Hastings@socsci.gla.ac.uk for further information.
