Biography

Dr Kathryn Lowe is a Senior Lecturer in English Language. She was on Leverhulme-funded research leave for Lent and Easter terms 2002, and was also Snell Visitor at Balliol College, Oxford.She spent a previous sabbatical year (1997-8) as Munby Fellow in Bibliography at the University of Cambridge. Dr Lowe is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries

Her teaching interests include Old and Middle English language and literature, Old Icelandic, history of the English language, and manuscript studies.

Dr Lowe is currently working on a new edition of the Anglo-Saxon charters of Bury St Edmunds. This volume is to form part of the Anglo-Saxon Charters Series, a project published by Oxford University Press and sponsored jointly by the British Academy and Royal Historical Society. She is responsible for producing the editions and translations of the charters themselves themselves together with related discussion on language, the archive and its textual transmission. Prof Sarah Foot (Oxford) is writing the historical analysis and commentary to the edition. Dr Lowe is author of many articles on Old and Middle English language and on the transition from Old to Middle English. Her principal research interests are in Old English language, textual transmission, charter studies and the history of literacy. She is consultant on documentary materials to the Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English (principal author: M.
