Centre for Inter-Faith Studies

Inter-faith event at the University of GlasgowThe Centre for Inter-Faith Studies exists within the School of Divinity and was founded by Professor Perry Schmidt-Leukel in 2001, closely following the establishment of the Chair for World Religions for Peace in 2000.  As the Department of Theology and Religious Studies has expanded its teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels into the different world religions, it has become increasingly apparent that there is a particular interest in the field of inter-faith studies.  Growing awareness of religious pluralism creates within each of the different religious traditions the challenge to seek a better understanding of the relationship between one's own and the other's religion.

Today there is a widely recognised need for academic reflection on the worldwide process of inter-religious encounter, and this means deepening and expanding the traditional aims of comparative religion.  The promotion of inter-faith studies is an urgent requisite for a better mutual understanding between the world's religious traditions and, consequently, makes an important contribution to dialogue and peace between them.

Sponsors/Funding: The Chair of World Religions for Peace was established at the initiative of Mr. Gerald Weisfeld.  It was made possible by generous financial support from the Weisfeld Foundation.

Acting Director of the Centre: Dr Rose Drew

Further Information: The Centre offers a designated degree (M.Th. or M.Litt.) in Inter-Faith Studies.  The Centre is not limited to study in any particular faith or tradition.  It is committed to open research and seeks to encourage mutual understanding among members of different faith communities.
