Head of Department
Theology & Religous Studies
The Department of Theology and Religious Studies (incorporating Trinity College) is currently within of the Faculty of Arts. Theology (or Divinity) has been taught in a variety of guises from the inception of the University in 1451, the year when any book (the Bible) was first printed. Over the centuries, theology in the ancient cathedral city of Glasgow has always adapted to the relevant needs of society, churches, and scholarly enterprise, and continues to do so explicitly within the context of rapidly changing modern conditions, religious, cultural, academic and social.
Activity in this Department and Research School spans both academic and vocational teaching, learning, and research across disparate but interconnected areas and disciplines. This is in respect largely of Judaeo-Christian traditions, religious or secularized, but also of Islam and other world faiths in a significant way. All subjects can be studied from within or without a personal faith base, so that the Department’s doors are wide open to anyone willing to learn and contribute.
While our community has a strong Glasgow and West of Scotland base, as is appropriate, staff and a good number of our students come from all over the British Isles, the Continent of Europe, North America, and elsewhere overseas. So we do have a cosmopolitan flavour.
Fortunately, our Department is physically located at the very centre of the imposing university campus in a way that is very convenient for everything, academic and social. To this extent, as in the past, the study of theology in Glasgow takes place at the heart of the university in the European tradition – and a university which was rated in the recent National Student Survey as the third best place in the UK to study.
If you are thinking of coming here, to study as an undergraduate or postgraduate or as a visiting researcher, please roam around our Website to learn more about our multiple identities, provision, research, and activities. And feel free to contact any of us for further information.
