Postgraduate Resources

There are numerous resources available for postgraduates at Glasgow. Here are some of the main ones:

1) Library Resources

2) IT and other resources

1) Library Resources

Glasgow University Library (GUL) is the major research resource at Glasgow for the humanities.  The on-line catalogue makes it easy to establish where books are held, and there is on-line access to the catalogues of many other major UK libraries. Other facilities available in the library include photocopying machines, group study rooms, audio-visual facilities, textual databases and networked resources such as newspapers, journals, encyclopaedias and dictionaries, and online databases and collections.

The Special Collections Department holds several important collections of particular Scottish interest such as an unexplored archive of Scottish Victorian fiction, a collection of the letters of John Davidson and the Scottish Theatre Archive, a unique collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century theatrical material, as well as many holdings relating to Scottish poetry and prose. In addition, it is renowned for its medieval and early modern manuscripts and printed books in its Hunterian, Hamilton, Ewing, and Ferguson collections as well as for the internationally famous Stirling-Maxwell collection of emblem books from the sixteenth century and the recently acquired Edwin Morgan collection.

Departmental Library

There is a Departmental Library, supplementary to the main University collections, which is primarily for the use of staff, research fellows and postgraduate students. It is housed on the second floor of 7 University Gardens.

The Mitchell Library is within walking distance of the University and is Europe’s largest public reference library, containing over a million volumes. It is a good alternative source of primary reading materials. The Mitchell is a designated Open University study centre - all Open University course materials are held in stock.

The resources of the National Library of Scotland, situated fifty miles away in Edinburgh, are also in easy reach, by rail or road.

2) IT and Other Resources

IT Facilities All students at Glasgow University are entitled to have access to electronic mail and the Internet. You can access these facilities from a number of places throughout the campus.

Departmental Postgraduate Room. The Department of Scottish Literature has a dedicated postgraduate study/IT room situated on the ground floor of 7 University Gardens. This room has a number of networked pcs and printing facilities.

Postgraduate Study Spaces

There is a study space specifically for graduate students within the Faculty of Arts located on the top floor of the Modern Languages Building, 16 University Gardens.  Its facilities include 40 flat screen networked computers, networked printer, lockers, internal phone, lounge space, notice board, and 24-hour access (key pad entry).  A swipe card is issued to all study space users, against a deposit of £5.  Locker space and keys are also available, for an additional £5 deposit.  These are administered by Richard Codd, Arts Faculty PG Office, 6 University Gardens (first floor).

Graduate students in the Faculty of Arts, alongside those in Law, Business & Social Sciences and Education, will also have access to a PG study space on the first floor of the Gilbert Scott (Main) Building.  Its facilities include Wi-fi, hot-desking space, study rooms, seminar/meeting rooms, lounge space, and disabled access.

The STELLA Laboratory in 6 University Gardens, next door to the Department of Scottish Literature, is a resource specially dedicated to the School of English and Scottish Language and Literature, and you can use the facilities of the lab for word-processing, to check your e-mail, use (e.g.) online corpora and resources such as the Scottish National Dictionary, the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue, and the Oxford English Dictionary, or work with digital teaching material and database resources developed by our own Department. The STELLA Laboratory is also the home for subsidiary projects, such as COMET and STARN, the SCOTS Project (Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech), and ARIES Grammar and Punctuation.

Glasgow University Postgraduate Club (also known as ‘The Research Club’) is situated at 13 University Gardens, on the other side of University Gardens. It is a lively social centre with recently upgraded facilities.  It offers meals and refreshments, as well as social events, at reasonable prices.
