Taught Masters Degrees

The School of Law offers four different types of taught masters degree programmes:

  • Master of Laws (LLM)
  • Masters in Research in Law (MRes)
  • Master of Science (MSc)
  • Masters in Medical Law (MML)

Apply NowThe Master of Laws (LLM)

1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

The Master of Laws (LLM) degree at Glasgow School of Law is a taught masters programme, made up of teaching, assessment and a dissertation. Class sizes are limited to 25 students per class, allowing a deeper level of learning, and close staff and student interaction.

Students take four courses, each of which run over two semesters. Three must come from the courses available on the chosen LLM. In the summer period, students are required to write a 15,000 - 20,000 word dissertation under supervision.

There are five LLM programmes available:


Master of Science (MSc)

1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

The Master of Science (MSc) programmes are jointly run by the School of Law and other departments within the University. The following programme is run by the School of Law, in partnership with the Departments of Politics and Philosophy. Students taking this programme will graduate with a degree from the School of Law:

The following two degrees are run by the Department of Politics, and are supported by the School of Law. Students taking these programmes will graduate with a degree from the Department of Politics:

For the MSc, students are requierd to take three core courses and three further courses from a list of options (electives). In the summer period, candidates are required to write a dissertation of between 12,000 - 15,000 words, on a subject relevant to the programme, under supervision.


Masters in Research in Law (MRes)

1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

The Masters in Research in Law (MRes) offers an advanced introduction to the study of law and preparation for doctoral study in law. It serves as both a qualification in its own right as well as providing a platform for thsoe who wish to go on to study for a PhD.


Masters in Medical Law

3 years part-time, distance learning

The Masters in Medical Law (MML) compromises two years distance learning, and one year for writing a dissertation. Teaching is by online, interactive modules and attendance at two residential weekends each year.

Year 1 consists of a combination of compulsory core and optional modules, while Year 2 allows a greater element of student choice. At the end of this two year period, student have one further academic year to submit a dissertation of between 15,000 - 20,000 words under supervision.

The MML is anticipated to be of interest to lawyers, but also to students and professionals from other backgrounds, particularly healthcare. Due to its part-time nature, it can be taken alongside full-time employment.
