Research Degrees

The School welcomes applications from suitably qualified candidates for the degrees of PhD and LLM by Research.  Members of staff can offer supervision in a wide range of subject areas, and funding and scholarships are sometimes available to help you complete your studies.

PhD

A research student who has satisfactorily undertaken a course of special study or research, full-time for three years or part-time for four years in the University of Glasgow, may submit a thesis on the subject of his or her research for the degree of PhD. A PhD will only be awarded to someone who has shown in his or her thesis independent thought, critical judgement and a contribution to knowledge. The part-time option is available to UK and other EU students only.

LLM by Research

The LLM by Research is a route to a masters qualification that involves writing a 30,000 word thesis on an area of law or legal thought of your choice.  The degree is most suitable for those wishing to improve their employment prospects, but could also serve as preparation for a research career or PhD.  The LLM by Research is available as a one year full-time or two year part-time programme.  [You may download a fuller description of the LLM by Research]

MRes in Law

The Masters in Research in Law (MRes) offers an advanced introduction to the study of law and a preparation for doctoral study in law. It serves both as a qualification in its own right as well as providing a platform for those who wish to go on to study for a PhD.
