Programme Aims

Our aim is to provide a programme which utilises the knowledge gained at undergraduate level and develops practical skills thus ensuring that the transition from university to traineeship/devilling is effected as seamlessly as possible.

Professionalism is the ethos which will underline every aspect of the programme, from design of course content to delivery. We strive to build on the academic and research strengths of our prestigious School of Law, allowing the programme to bridge the gap between an academic programme and applied professional learning.

Programme Overview

The Diploma in Legal Practice programme is a full-time postgraduate course, worth 120 credits, taught between September and May.

Teaching will be mainly in small groups, where intensive practice-based learning will equip our students with the skills required for professional legal practice.

The programme is made up five core compulsory subjects, namely

  • Civil Litigation
  • Conveyancing
  • Criminal Litigation
  • Business Finance and Practice Awareness
  • Private Client

In addition to the five compulsory core subjects, the programme will also offer a wide range of elective choices. Following our consultation of students and legal firms, our elective choice for 2010 will be:

  • Family Law
  • Human Rights
  • Advanced Criminal Litigation
  • Advanced Civil Litigation
  • Public Law
  • Corporate and Finance

Participants will choose three elective courses from this choice of six, each worth 15 credits.

This will allow participants the opportunity to specialise in an area of law which may be beneficial in their traineeship, or to develop learning in a subject area in which they are interested.
