Welcome
The Department of Religious Education is one of the largest, most innovative and exciting teaching and research departments of its kind in Britain. Its work embraces Religious Education in both religious and secular schools as well as the study of religion, politics, education, philosophy, theology and culture. There is wide staff expertise in the fields of anthropology, ethnography and sociology as well as philosophy of religion, philosophy of education, theology and cultural studies.
Programmes on offer include undergraduate and initial teacher education degrees and diplomas, Postgraduate Certificates, Masters, PhD and EdD. We also collaborate with other departments in the university in providing courses in teaching philosophy. Particular expertise is to be found in the study of religions in the context of Catholic education and schooling.
The Department is committed to being at the leading edge of international developments in the fields of Religious Education, Philosophy in education, Religious Schooling (including Catholic Schooling) and Moral and Citizenship Education. This issues in the highest quality teaching, research and scholarship as well as flagship initiatives in continuing professional development.
Through its programmes of initial teacher education, the Faculty of Education is recognised as the major provider of teachers for Catholic schools in Scotland. The Department therefore retains an important responsibility for the preparation of those teachers intending to work in Catholic schools and to teach Religious Education within them. This responsibility is discharged through a network of partnerships with Catholic Education and also in the continuing professional development of all staff active in the Catholic sector.
