Introduction to the Section
The Section of Public Health and Health policy is part of the Division of Community Based Sciences which was formed in 2002 as part of the faculty of Medicine restructuring, and comprises three Sections:
- Public Health and Health policy
- General Practice and Primary Care
- Psychological Medicine.
The MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit is affiliated to the Division.
The aim of the Public Health & Health Policy Section of the University of Glasgow is to contribute to maximising an equitable distribution of population health and well-being in Scotland and elsewhere:
- by creating, exchanging and using knowledge;
- through high quality research and teaching activities;
- by participation in policy, practice and professional development
The Section of Public Health and Health Policy is highly active, undertaking a range of teaching and research activities. It contributes to both the undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching, including the Master of Public Health. The Section also contributes to CPD through short courses, particularly relating to Health economics.
Research income continues to increase and the number of registered PhD students is also rising.
The Section is based within Lilybank Gardens and currently comprises 14 academic staff (including 5 professorial appointments), approx 21 research staff, 4 research support staff and 4 centrally funded secretarial/administrative staff. There are also public health trainees attached to the Section, currently 3.
