Biography

Martin holds both a first class honours degree and PhD (university anniversary scholarship) from the Department, also spending time as a visiting research scholar in the Department of Political Science at McGill University, Montreal.  In addition to the publications listed below, he is editor of a forthcoming special issue of the journal National Identities, Vol. 13 (1) and has a chapter in a forthcoming ECPR / Routledge edited volume on religion and politics in Europe.  He is in charge of the British data set for the European research project: "The religious preferences of Members of the European Parliament" (RPMEP), involving members of RECON (Reconstituting Democracy in Europe), a European network funded by the European Commission. He has also recently been appointed a Hansard Society visiting fellow for 2009 / 2010, and been consulted by the Scottish Government in relation to the role of ballot order in preferential voting systems.  His article on religious conservative politics was recently awarded the Political Studies Association prize for the best article from the 2008 volume of the journal Politics.
