Department of Philosophy
Since the University's foundation in 1451, such figures as Francis Hutcheson, Adam Smith and Thomas Reid have put Glasgow's name indelibly on the philosophical map. Research and teaching in the present department extend across the entire range of philosophy, including Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Language, Logic, Philosophy of Mathematics, Philosophy of Science, Ethics, Aesthetics, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and the History of Philosophy. The department currently has almost 1,000 undergraduate students, of whom over 180 are honours students. We have a lively graduate community of 25-30 postgraduates.
Prospective undergraduates might wish to download our Philosophy undergraduate study brochure and read the Philosophy Undergraduate Study Overview. For details of how to apply, please see the University's Undergraduate Study pages; queries should be directed to the Recruitment Admissions and Participation Service. Prospective postgraduates should consult the postgraduate section of this website.
