LHC Switch-on ~ 'Red Button' Day ~ 10 September 2008
On 10th September 2008 the world's biggest scientific experiment, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was switched on at CERN. The LHC is the most powerful particle accelerator ever built by man and will seek answers to some of the most fundamental mysteries of our Universe.
PSD8 - The 8th International Conference on Position Sensitive Detectors was recently held in Glasgow, from the 1st to the 5th of September 2008. The conference, which is held every three years, explored recent scientific and technical developments of position-sensitive radiation detector systems, including those for visible light detection, used in a range of applications.
Further details can be found at: http://www.psd8.physics.gla.ac.uk/.
First Particles in LHC seen at LHCb experiment - 22 August 2008
At 17:30 on Friday 22 August 2008 LHCb, one of the four LHC experiments, reconstructed in its Vertex Locator (VELO) the first particles from the LHC. The observation was made during a synchronisation test of the accelerator when the particles passed through a short section of the new 27km long LHC accelerator.
The observation is reported on the website of the weekly Science Journal, Nature.
