Position: Professor of Popular Music Politics

Research Interests

Martin's research interests are in the Politics of Popular Music, an area in which he has a number of publications, and in issues concerning censorship and freedom of expression.

Martin is a member of the editorial board of Popular Music, and Popular Music and Society, the British Journal of Music Education and Beitrage zur Popularmusikforschung.  He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Adult and Continuing Education and served as reviews editor between 2004 and 2005.

      Other Information

      Martin has served as an external examiner for Ph.D. theses at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, the University of Liverpool, Manchester Metropolitan University and for MPhils at the Universities of Strathclyde and Liverpool.

      Between July and August 2000 Martin was visiting lecturer in Popular Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University, Queensland, Australia.  In April 2003, October 2006 and April 2008 he was visiting lecturer in the Department of Cultural History at the University of Turku, Finland.  In August and September 2006 he was visiting lecturer in the Department of Contemporary Music Studies MacQuarrie University, Australia and in November 2006 he was visiting lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Joensuu.

      Martin was a member of the Advisory Board of the Starnet project based in the Department of Cultural History at the University of Turku, Finland.

      Martin's appearances have included BBC1, BBC 2, BBC Radio 2 and Radio 4, Radio Scotland, Radio Merseyside, Radio York and Scottish Television.

      In 2003 Martin was a member of the Subject Health review team for Commercial Music at the University of Paisley.

      Martin is a contributor to the Index on Censorship.

      He is chair of Freemuse, an international organisation dedicated to musicians' freedom of expression.
