The Institute of Medical
Genetics.
The Department of Medical Genetics is part of the Medical Faculty of the University of Glasgow which is one of the largest medical faculties in Europe. The department is situated in the Institute of Medical Genetics which also houses the West of Scotland Regional Genetics Service which serves a population of three million. Additional peripheral genetic clinics are held in major towns throughout the region (population 3 million) and joint clinics are held with a number of other medical specialties. The Scottish Muscle Centre is based in the Institute of Medical Genetics, the Royal Hospital For Sick Children and the Southern General Hospital.
The West of Scotland Regional Genetics Service with The Royal Hospital for Sick
Children, (which contains the University
Department of Child Health, ) the Queen Mothers Maternity Hospital, (which is
one of the locations of the University
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and the Community Child Health Services
together form the Yorkhill NHS
Trust. Each of these units is located on the Yorkhill
Hospitals campus
a short walk from the main University campus.
The Royal Hospital for Sick Children is the principal children's hospital in the West
of Scotland, and one of the three big UK paediatric centres (with Great Ormond Street
Hospital and Liverpool). It has around 325 beds, and 30 neonatal intensive care unit cots,
more than 100 consultants and 25 specialist registrars. It provides hospital care to the
children of Glasgow and specialist tertiary care in many subspecialties including
cardiology, oncology-haematology, renal medicine, neurology and neuromuscular
disorders, neonatal and cardiac surgery an paediatric and adult medical
genetics.
