Cytogenetics is mainly taught using images captured by microscope then analysed by computer in the teaching cluster. The days of cutting out chromosomes from a photograph with scissors and sticking them on a karyotype card with glue are long past. In the taught part of the course all students are expected to achieve practical skills in a wide range of specialist genetic techniques and standard laboratory procedures. However, it is not all hi tech. Stdents might get to play with the PlayDo, if they are very good!
Molecular genetic techniques are taught in the teaching laboratory.
