Looking SE down the Valley of the upper Water of Deugh with Cairnsmore of
Carsphairn dominating the skyline. The upper Deugh is rarely paddled
though since it is in a remote high valley far from the main road most passers
by would not even know of its existence. The river is not mentioned in any of
the kayak or canoe guides. Access is by a single track road off the A713 high
above Loch Doon. The paddle starts 1 mile
upstream from this viewpoint and ends behind the distant Craig of Knockgray in the middle
of the picture. The single weir can be seen just below Knockgray.
You
know you are in for a good paddle when the approach road is running at a good
Grade 1.
Water of
Deugh, a spate burn in Galloway. It is best to judge the level at the put in
because the take out at Carsphairn is a long way down stream. If there are
not too many rocks showing through near the road end, it is paddle-able. If the
river bed is a boulder garden, enjoy the view, then go somewhere else.

High
water mark: deer grass clumps fifteen feet up birches in the Green Well of
Scotland Gorge. This is a spate burn!!! Grade might vary a bit.
The
Green Well of Scotland, the Guardian is just round the upstream corner.
The
Old Brig below the Green Well of Scotland, a path on the right bank allows
inspection of the gorge from the main road south to Carsphairn.

"If
you could only try a little harder to do what the other guys do, I could get a
better picture."
The
take out below the road bridge over the Water of Deugh, south of Carsphairn.
Note the plucky paddler, emerging from the torrent but still clutching the remains of his paddle. Rule 3a "Never let go of your paddle."
Alternatively continue downstream on very pleasant grade 2 water and take out at Glede Bog, 584926 there is a handy lay-by on the B729.
