Rivers and whitewater kayaking in Scotland.

Carsphairn Lane.

Drumjohn Power station. This is part of the Galloway hyro-electric power scheme and captures water from both Loch Doon and the upper Water of Deugh. It empties into the Carsphairn Lane which joins the Water of Deugh lower down near Carsphairn. If releasing, you can paddle the Carsphairn Lane or Water of Deugh below Carsphairn in drought conditions. The power station is now hidden by trees from the A713, but in previous years the sight of the open central pressure relief valve was very impressive.

The sign on the left warns of sudden increases in water flow. This section flows at running pace with few eddies except for the occasional drainage ditch. Watch out for overgrown trees obstructing the river below this bridge. Portage advisable. There is one grade  2 rapid below Brocklock before the Lane widens and slows for most of the way to near the Deugh where it speeds up again under a wire and a fence requiring another portage.

"If you could only try a little harder to do what the other guys do, I could get a better picture."

The take out below the road bridge over the Water of Deugh, south of Carsphairn.

Note the plucky paddler, emerging from the torrent but still clutching the remains of his paddle. Rule 3a "Never let go of your paddle."

Alternatively, continue downstream on very pleasant grade 2 water and take out at Glede Bog, 584926, there is a handy lay-by on the B729.
