The Awe Barrage to the sea at Loch Etive: 5.75km, 36 metre drop. Put in NN045287 restricted space in lay-by on south side of road, watch out for graded 5 traffic. Take out NN010327 plenty of space in carpark by jetty. If one gate on the barrage is open it is run able at grade2/3. It becomes more serious with more gates open. A good indicator is the bend above the road bridge at NN031298, this should have good water between the rocks. As you approach the weir at NN016320 you will come to warning signs with marker ropes strung across the river warning against further progress. The weir has a gentle angle with the main channel on river left. It is constructed of ferro concrete rubble from a demolished building and in September 2003 there were several very nasty iron rods in the main channel. It is a short portage on the left bank or down the dry slope of the weir on the right at moderate levels.
