Careers
If you graduate with an Honours degree in Mathematics, whether it is as a single subject or in combination with some other discipline, you will find a wide range of careers open to you. Over the years our students have followed many different career paths, ranging from high finance, medical research to aviation.
In recent years, graduates in the Mathematical Sciences have been amongst the best paid new graduates. Indeed research performed by the University of Swansea shows that an average graduate can expect to earn £149,760 more in their lifetime than someone with two A-levels. For a graduate in Mathematics this figure rises to over £200,000. Graduates from Glasgow are very well thought of in industry, finance and the public sector. Our degree is also well respected by other universities, and about 30% of our graduates go on to a further degree either in Glasgow or elsewhere. Mathematicians are in great demand in the financial sector, with opportunities to work in insurance, banking, accountancy and stockbroking. There are jobs available in engineering and other areas of industry, where the mathematical modelling and problem solving skills gained in the course are highly prized. Students also go directly into jobs in computing from our Mathematics degree.
