Cardiovascular studies

Academic staff in Integrative and Systems Biology have links with those based in the Medical Faculty's Division of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, in particular the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre and with academics in the Veterinary Faculty's Cell Sciences Division. In addition, there are strong links with colleagues in the FBLS Neuroscience and Molecular Pharmacology Research Theme. The groups in ISB develop the basic science associated with their research topics, these include: excitation-contraction coupling in cardiac and smooth and skeletal muscle; factors that control tone in systemic and pulmonary blood vessels; molecular pharmacology membrane receptors. The academics use their techniques to support translational research in collaboration with clinical colleagues both in Glasgow and elsewhere. Amongst the topics studied are: heart failure, pulmonary and systemic hypertension, diabetes, metabolic disorders and the effects of exercise on these clinical conditions.
