HOW TO GET TO GLASGOW

Air
Glasgow is served by 3 international airports

  • Glasgow International Airport is located 15 minutes from the city centre and is Scotland’s international gateway.  In addition, frequent direct services are available from most major UK cities including: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newquay, Norwich, Nottingham East Midlands and Southampton.  There is an average of 43 flights per day between London and Glasgow, and a number of low-cost carriers serve this airport. 

Delegates arriving at Glasgow International Airport can take a shuttle bus in to the city and the west end, which departs every 10 minutes and stops at the major city centre hotels.  The return cost is £4.50. Taxis are always available, at an average cost of £16.

  • Glasgow Prestwick International Airport is located 32 miles South West of Glasgow.  This airport operates RyanAir low cost flights to 22 scheduled destinations including Belfast, Bournemouth and London Stansted.

The airport is served by a direct train link to Glasgow city centre, with a journey time of 40 minutes.  The tickets are half place anywhere in Scotland on presentation of your airline ticket. The ticket to Glasgow Central Station cost just £2.50.

  • Edinburgh International Airport is located just 45 minutes drive from Glasgow and offers delegates an alternative opportunity to fly direct into central Scotland. Public transport is available by bus or by bus and train link. Prices are from £9.50 return fare.

Rail
Glasgow has two major train stations, Glasgow Central servicing the South and Glasgow Queen Street servicing Edinburgh and the North.

There is a fast intercity rail service which operates from many of the major towns in England to Glasgow Central.  There is a sleeper service from London to Glasgow.  Journey time from London is from 4 hours 15 minutes.

Road
Scotland has an extensive motorway road network.  The city of Glasgow is linked to Edinburgh with the M8, England on the M74, Stirling on the M80 and the West Coast of Scotland via the M77.

In and around Glasgow
Glasgow is served by an extensive public transport system. Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) provides frequent and reliable service around the city and immediate area. 

Subway
Subway system provides frequent (every few minutes) services around the city and surrounding areas by 2 circular lines. The University of Glasgow is located in the city’s west end. Subway stations for travel to and from the vicinity of the University are Hillhead and Kelvin Hall. Cost is £1.20 per single journey. This is the quickest and most inexpensive way to travel to and from the city centre and west end.

Bus
Buses are an inexpensive way to travel round Glasgow and beyond. There are many stops and frequent services to and from the west end. Journey times into the city centre are approximately 15 minutes. 

Taxi
Taxis are the most cost effective in the UK and a single journey from the West End to City Centre costs ~£8 with journey times of approximately 10 minutes.

By Foot
Glasgow is a compact city and easy to navigate on foot. The west end is a very pleasant and safe area to travel on foot.
