Postgraduate Study

Postgraduate teaching and research supervision form an integral part of the research culture of this Department.  The Department of History offers taught and research degrees through the School of Historical Studies

Taught Masters Degrees

Graduates are encouraged to begin their postgraduate study with a one-year (two years part-time) taught Masters degree.

The School offers a range of MLitt and MSc degrees, from the broad and flexible MLitt/MSc in History to the more specialised MLitts in War Studies and Scottish Studies or the MLitt/MSc in History of Medicine.  These degrees provide advanced engagement with historical subjects, with a strong emphasis on developing independence of thought and research skills.  Masters students take two semesters of coursework and complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation based on original research.  The MLitt/MSc can be taken as an end in itself or as the first step towards a PhD.

Research Degrees

Most research students pursue a PhD (three years full-time, five years part-time), though a two year research Masters degree is also available.  Research postgraduates pursue specialised projects under the supervision of two members of staff and produce a doctoral dissertation of no more than 100,000 words.  Staff invite inquiries from prospective students to discuss possible dissertation topics.  For staff research interests, see the Research Clusters page.
