MSc in Museum Theory and Practice

12 months full-time, 24 / 36 months part-time
Anticipated start: September 2009

Introduction

This exciting, forward-thinking course provides post-graduate students with training that will give them the range of skills to work as museum curators and resource officers in the 21st Century.  Run in partnership with Glasgow Museums, this programme builds upon the research strengths and rich collections available in the City's collections, and HATII's existing expertise.  This programme will allow students to study museum theory, phenomenology, and the philosophy of collecting and collections whilst simultaneously gaining practical experience in the field increasing their employability.

Established leaders in the delivery of MSc programmes in Information Management and Preservation, and in Computer Forensics and E-Discovery, HATII has a proven track record of delivering courses which are interesting and stimulating to students, and provide graduates with necessary skills for employment  in their chosen fields.  The links between established and developing theory in these sectors with practice is key, and will be thoroughly explored in this MSc. 

Content

The degree programme consists of a mix of taught courses, group projects, and dissertation work   Core courses in Semester one are Records & Evidence; An Introduction to Phenomenology; Collecting Issues I. In the second semester courses include an extended Project Placement (Collecting Issues II); Heritage and Cultural Informatics; and dissertation preparation.  For the masters qualification students are also required to write a dissertation and successfully complete a course in Research Methods and Professional Studies.  All taught courses are available individually for continuing professional development purposes.  

Entry Requirements

A good honours degree (2:1 or higher), or the equivalent from a recognised institution. Preference will be given to applicants with prior work experience in the field.
