Undergraduate Design Projects
As an Engineer, your job will be to create new and useful systems. This requires practical skills as well as sound theoretical understanding. In addition to normal laboratories, you will develop your practical skills by participating in major design projects each year.
Past students have found these projects the most enjoyable parts of their University studies.
Electronic Design Project (year 2)
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of good engineering practice, using professional CAD tools, in designing and constructing a piece of practical equipment. You will develop analogue, digital and hybrid electronics, produce PCBs, and perform assembly and test.
Team Design Project (year 3)
You will learn how to work in a professional engineering team, developing skills in project planning, management and advanced skills in product design and construction. Your team will build a completely autonomous vehicle - competitively against other teams. Your robot will include sensors, actuators, and power management, all managed by a microcontroller running your own custom software.
Individual Project (year 4 Bachelors)
If you opt for a B.Eng. degree, you will complete a substantial project in your final year under the one-to-one supervision of a member of academic staff. Your project will deal with a practical engineering problem and will often be in advance of the industrial state-of-art. Many students find that this project acts as a passport to future employment or Ph.D. research.
Team Project (year 4 Masters)
If you opt for an M.Eng. degree, you will carry out a six month industrial placement, usually working in an interdisciplinary engineering team. You prepare for this placement by carrying out an innovative team project in the department - this year the teams developed the electronic subsystems for the Glasgow University Formula Student single seat racing car.
International Industrial Project (year 5 Masters)
Your six month industrial placement will give you direct experience of the highest technicals levels of international industry, and is unique in Scotland. Recent placements have included:
- Analog Devices - Limerick, Ireland
- Biosensors - Moncofa, Spain
- GE Harris - Melbourne, Florida
- Infineon Technologies - Münich, Germany
- LETI - Grenoble, France
- Motorola - Austin, Texas
- Philips Research - Eindhoven, Netherlands
- Robert Bosch - Buehl, Germany
- SAMLAB, IMT - Neuchatel, Switzerland
- Thomson CSF - Orsay, France
- Xilinx - San Jose, California
Placements may take place in an English speaking laboratory, but many students opt for an intensive language course in year 4, and a project held in a European laboratory in year 5. If you opt for this 'European' M.Eng., you will be especially coveted by potential employers.
