Professional interests

My research concentrates on the development of more efficient numerical techniques for the simulation of various physical phenomena, with an emphasis on moving boundary problems (fracture mechanics, biofilm growth). To date, I have focused on modifications of the finite element method (extended finite elements (XFEM) and the smooth finite element method (SFEM)), and, more recently, so-called meshfree methods, with Dr. Timon Rabczuk, through what is a most fruitful collaboration.
The second main research direction I have been pursuing is a posteriori error estimation and adaptivity for partition of unity enriched numerical techniques such as the XFEM. This work is done in conjunction with Dr Marc Duflot (CENAERO, Belgium), Dr Sergey Korotov (HUT, Helsinki, Finland), Dr Marcus Rueter and Professor Tiantang Yu (HHU, China). Our goal is to devise efficient and effective error estimators and adaptivity techniques for the XFEM, including goal-oriented error measures for fracture mechanics.
