Welcome to the Department of Central & East European Studies
The Study of Central and Eastern Europe has a long tradition at Glasgow University. For over 50 years CEES has covered developments in communist and post communist societies and is recognised as one of the world's leading centres for research and teaching in its field.
The Department was delighted with its performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise which confirmed its leading position amongst departments engaged in Central and East European Studies in the UK. Submitting twice the number of staff as in 2001, including new entrants to the profession, 85% of its work was rated “international”, “internationally excellent” or “world leading”; in its unit of assessment the department was ranked first in Scotland and in the top 10 in the UK
Our courses offer an opportunity to study a variety of rewarding and fascinating topics in a fast changing region. The Department prides itself on offering an innovative and student-centred place of learning, with staff teaching and providing supervision on their own individual areas and countries of expertise.

CEES PhD Student completes ESRC and Scottish Government Internship
PhD student Paul Jordan secured a placement with the Directorate for Culture, External Affairs and Tourism under the jont Esrc and Scottish GOvernmenet Internship scheme from December 2009 - March 2010. As well providing an opportunity to see the workings of the Government first-hand, interns are also given individual projects to work on in an area of work which is relevant to the unit. Paul's placement project focussed on the Creative Industries in Scotland.
Paul's report and comments :
I enjoyed the internship experience and not only found it interesting but I was also able to build upon my skills as a researcher.
I would certainly recommend the internship scheme to others. The placement strengthened my interest in the work of the Scottish Government and I am keen to explore this as a future employment option.
New Partners Announced on International Masters programme

Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, where they successfully negotiated
cooperation agreements with two new international partner institutions
- the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) and the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research (KIMEP).
Both agreements had prior approval from the Senate Office and the
International Office. They offer CEES students at Glasgow the
