Scottish research

Taken collectively, we represent the largest group of scholars actively researching the archaeology of Scotland. Our approach to Scottish archaeology recognises the connections with the rest of Britain, Ireland and NW Europe and promotes collaboration with cognate scholars in History and Celtic as well as with all the national bodies responsible for Scottish heritage (Historic Scotland, Royal Commission for Ancient and Historic Monuments in Scotland, National Trust for Scotland).

For example, the Strathearn Environs and Royal Forteviot (SERF) project has been designed to harvest the fruit of this research ethos. We are employing a range of approaches from the scientific to the linguistic to explore this exceptional archaeologically-rich and historically-significant Strathearn landscape to make a distinctly Scottish contribution to themes of European relevance, such as monumental religious expressions, the long-term continuity of ceremonial centres, the growth of kingship and the evolution of political institutions.
