MSc Aerospace Engineering and Management

This MSc is aimed at students with an engineering background, but with little management experience. Management is an extremely important aspect of engineering, and for those graduates looking to advance to senior positions in companies and to perform well at this level then knowledge and understanding of management principles will give you a competitive edge in the jobs market.

MSc Programme

This MSc in structured to provided management courses in the first semester, which is common with all the Business & Management MSc programmes, and aims to provide a solid grounding in Business & Management. Knowledge and understanding are cultivated principally through lectures and project/tutorial/workshop groupings. Engineering courses are taught in the second semester, which aims to enhance the students’ group working and project management capability at the same time as improving their depth of knowledge in chosen Aerospace Engineering subjects. The summer period is for individual project work, aimed at practical application and consolidation of earlier courses and enhancing the ability to do independent work as well as present results in the most appropriate form.

General Programme Information

To apply for this master, please visit the International and Postgraduate Service website.  For further information on the programme, contact Dr Christopher York.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the MSc programme are at least a second class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, physical sciences or an engineering subject. In some circumstances other academic or professional qualifications may be recognised as equivalent. Students with lower qualifications may be considered for the Postgraduate Diploma programme. Non-native English speakers may be required to provide evidence of English language proficiency.

Duration and Structure

The standard MSc programme will run for 12 months. Students may start in either September or January. Students starting in January will do the Engineering (semester 2) courses first and Management (semester 1) courses last. All taught courses will be delivered at the University of Glasgow. Course modules are examined at the end of the semester in which they are delivered (December or May exam diet). An individual project, which will form the MSc dissertation, will be undertaken between June and September. Through existing collaborations with industrial and academic partners, students may have the opportunity to study at partner institutions in the UK and further afield during the summer months.

Assessment

The assessment will be carried out according to the GU code of assessment, and will comprise a combination of formal examinations, essays and project work. They will be further assessed in the coursework, report writing and oral presentations associated with the team and individual projects.

In order to be eligible for an MSc award, students must complete all components of the programme satisfactorily. MSc students must obtain passes in all course modules also a pass in their individual project work. Students not meeting the requirements for the MSc programme at the end of the second semester may graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma if minimum requirements are met. If starting the programme in January,  students will be able to obtain early exit only in the following academic year.

Fees and Funding

SAAS may provide funding for students who have been living in Scotland for more than three years. Other funding routes include career development loans and industrial sponsorship. Part financial support from the University of Glasgow may be available to outstanding candidates.
