UNIVERSITY of GLASGOW

Scottish Network for Able Pupils

Associate Tutor Scheme

SNAP has been working closely with a number of local authorities in Scotland for some years.  In partnership with these authorities we have established a network of Associate Tutors  who act as a focus for the expansion of staff development, policy and provision at a local level. These tutors are part of an ongoing collaborative programme of staff development with SNAP staff at the University of Glasgow. We are particularly proud of the work that this group has achieved.

The Associate Tutor Scheme is designed as a means of supporting local education authorities in Scotland to take forward policy, provision and practice for more able pupils.  Associate tutors are individuals recognised by their local education authority as having particular interest and/or expertise in the education of more able pupils.

Up to five associate tutors may be identified by an affiliated authority. Some authorities have found this group approach extremley supportive for those involved.

Associate tutors have:

  • access to all SNAP publications
  • support in developing inset materials
  • access to research findings from related projects within the University of Glasgow and current international research
  • the opportunity to attend three staff development days in three venues across Scotland
  • the opportunity to discuss and share ideas with like minded people
  • the opportunity to hear quality guest speakers

Associate Tutors have their own dedicated website pages as part of this website where they can continue to discuss and share ideas.

In addition to the above, SNAP utilise Online Reflection Units - these are free to all staff in Education Authorities who are members of our Associate Tutors Scheme:

  • Argyll and Bute Education Authority
  • Clackmannanshire Education Authority
  • East Dunbartonshire
  • Edinburgh City Education Authority
  • Falkirk Education Authority
  • North Ayrshire Education Authority
  • Scottish Borders Education Authority
  • Shetland Education Authority
  • South Lanarkshire Education Authority
  • Stirling Education Authority
  • West Dunbartonshire Education Authority

In session 2009-2010 tutors will develop materials for maths, creative writing and science alongside experts. These materials and lesson plans will be available to staff and pupils in Associate Tutor authorities.

If you would like to become an associate tutor and would like to find out more about joining the scheme please email snap@educ.gla.ac.uk or phone 0141 330 3071.
