Learning & Research opportunities
PhD studentships provide funding for up to 5 years, and offer 3 years of doctoral supervision plus training in research methods and language (see below). Studentships may be held at any of the CRCEES partner institutions, and cover tuition fees, plus annual stipend (in 2006-07 was £12,300). Where relevant, students registered for a PhD at one partner institution may undergo research methods and/or language training at another.
Research Methods: ESRC/AHRC recognised research training will be provided for all research students without an equivalent prior qualification. For most students this will take place at the University of Glasgow, where they will take the ESRC/AHRC-recognised MRes in Russian, Central and East European Studies. Where appropriate, students may follow an ESRC/AHRC-accredited research-training programme at another partner institution.
Additional relevant programmes include:
- MA Human Geography (Research) (University of Newcastle);
- MA Regional Development (Research) (University of Newcastle);
- MA History (Research) Pathways in Gender History and Contemporary History (University of Nottingham);
- MRes Social Anthropology, Ethnology and Cultural History (University of Aberdeen);
- MRes in International Politics (University of Aberdeen).
CRCEES will be able to offer the following courses of language training at the following institutions:
Glasgow: Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Estonian, and Latvian
Nottingham: Slovene, Serbian/Croatian and Russian (subsidiary only)
St Andrews: Uzbek, Ukrainian, Lithuanian (subsidiary only) and

Language training courses will be developed at each institution on the model of the Postgraduate Diploma in Russian currently offered at the University of Glasgow. There will also be provision for subsidiary training in a second language and maintenance courses for those with a good existing knowledge of a language.
