Short Description

This intensive week-long course introduces the absolute beginner to accurate drawing of the human head. You will learn about proportion and perspective, line, tone, texture and colour and how to use various drawing techniques and media. In a series of simple lessons and demonstrations you will learn how to draw the human head from various angles. A small fee will be charged for the model. Materials are not provided.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

The aims of the course are to:

■ Allow the student to develop skills in portrait drawing including how to 'see' like an artist.

■ Familiarise the student with a variety of drawing techniques, media and equipment.

■ Teach the student how to draw subject matter that is accurate in proportion in a variety of styles.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Practically demonstrate how to draw portraits technically and accurately in line and tone, texture and colours.

■ Practically demonstrate creativity in a variety of drawing techniques, media and style.
