Issued: Tue, 06 Sep 2011 13:02:00 BST
Three academics from the College of Social Sciences have been appointed as members of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s newly established Young Academy of Scotland, a forum for the best and most forward-looking people of their generation to develop a distinctive, coherent and influential “voice” to address some of the challenging issues facing society.
Professor Iain Docherty (from the Business School), Dr Cian O'Driscoll (from the School of Social & Political Sciences), and Professor Christian Tams (from the School of Law), were amongst 68 successful applicants to become members of the Young Academy, with applications received from over 300 individuals across Scotland.
The RSE has established the Young Academy to bring together some of the most able, innovative and forward-looking young academics, entrepreneurs, artists and professionals in Scotland, with the aim of stimulating creative ideas and collaborative working across disciplines and professions, to address some of the key challenges facing society in Scotland.
The RSE Young Academy is the first such development of its kind in the UK, which, it is hoped, will be part of a growing movement of Young Academies across the world, able to work together to contribute to solving some of the global challenges of the 21st Century.
