MA (Social Sciences) Progress Committee

All students are subject to the progress regulations relating to their programme of study, in this case the MA (Social Sciences) degree programme. These regulations are detailed in the University Calendar. However, for ease of interpretation you will be subject to consideration by the MA (Social Sciences) Progress Committee if:

You have not achieved 80 credits, of which at least 60 must be at Grade D or better, and you have not achieved a grade point average of at least 9 by the end of your first year.

or

You have not achieved 160 credits, of which at least 120 must be at Grade D or better, and you have not achieved a grade point average of at least 9 by the end of your second year.

The Progress Committee meets in September each year, just prior to that start of the next academic year, and you have the opportunity to make any case you think appropriate. Your Adviser of Studies may also accompany you. The Progress Committee has wide powers and may make any recommendations including:

  • Transfer to part-time study
  • Repeat of a year
  • Repeat of specific subjects
  • Discontinuation of studies

The Progress Committee consists of the  Convenor and two pther academic members of staff. The Chief Adviser of Studies also attends to provide reports and information.

Students still have the right to appeal to the College Appeals Committee if they feel that a Progress Committee decision is unfair or defective or the Progress Committee did not have all the relevant information available.
