Researcher Development Programme - Opportunities

Background

In 2001 The UK Research Councils in collaboration with UK GRAD and the HE sector developed the Joint Skills Statement this identifies the competencies that a postgraduate researcher should have or develop during the course of their PhD degree programme.

The statement covers seven sections:

A.    research skills and techniques
B.    research environment
C.    research management
D.    personal effectiveness
E.    communication skills
F.    teamworking and networking skills
G.    career management

It is embedded in the QAA Code of practice for the assurance of academic quality and standards in higher education.

Over the last six years the University has received funding from the Research Councils specifically targeted at developing transferable skills in doctoral students and the College of Social Sciences has been allocated ‘Roberts’ funding for the development of such skills, as laid out in sections C to G of the Joint Skills Statement  Amongst other things, the Graduate School is responsible for providing and facilitating training in line with the Joint Statement, and for managing the allocation of ‘Roberts’ funding to the College.

The Graduate School are delighted to be able to offer Schools and Students different allocations of funding:

2.  Professional development and Skills training Events
