Bursaries for in vivo Masters or MRes courses
For courses beginning September 2012
The BPS Integrative Pharmacology Fund is offering a limited number of £5,000 bursaries for in vivo Masters Courses (MSc and MRes). The bursaries are primarily intended to defray the costs of a mammalianin vivo project undertaken during a Masters or MRes course.
Bursaries are limited to UK students and will be allocated to eligible academic institutions based on the following criteria:
- The course outline, which must provide the student with an extensive knowledge of in vivo physiology and/or pharmacology
- The provision in the course of a project(s) that comprises at least 40% of the academic year and requires the student obtaining a home office licence for hands on in vivo work
- The commitment of the institution to mammalian in vivo research and training at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels
- The involvement of industry in supporting the course either financially or by “in kind” contributions
- The availability of funding from other sources that will ensure the viability of the course
Bursaries will be provided to institutions for a 3 year period, with continuation each year dependant on satisfactory reports from the previous year`s student in vivo projects and on the students degree classifications. The primary purpose of the bursary is to support mammalian in vivo project(s) and associated preliminary in vivo training that the student undertakes during the course, however up to 20% can be given directly to the student, if this is seen as advantageous for recruitment.
Masters courses that are the first year of a 1+3 PhD studentship are not eligible.
Applications (Max 4 A4 sides, 11 point font) should be made using the IPFMastersBursary2012 form by the course leader and should include the following information:
- The course outline
- The normal numbers enrolled/maximum numbers that the course can accommodate
- Results for the last 3 years of the course (e.g. distinctions, pass, fail, retakes)
- Examples of in vivo projects expected to be offered in the coming year and the expected proportion of these that will be undertaken in industry
- Evidence of the commitment of the Institution to in vivo research and training
- Details of the financial and “in kind” support for the course, including industry support
- The number of bursaries requested (maximum 5 per year)
Please send completed forms (saved as <Institution>IPFMastersBursary2012>) to js@bps.ac.uk
Please note: the IPF fund was set up to support UK in vivo skills. Institutions should distribute bursaries to UK students and especially those who express a wish to remain in the UK and continue in the field on in vivo research.
