MVLS excels in postgraduate research satisfaction survey
Research students in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences have rated their research environment more highly than the Russell Group average in the recent Postgraduate Research Experience Survey run by the Higher Education Academy.
Amongst the highlights:
- 86% of students stated the research environment had met their expectations. 6% higher than other Scottish institutions and 5% higher than the average for our fellow Russell Group institutions (the 20 leading research led universities across the UK).
- 92% of students agreed that their supervisor had the skills and subject knowledge to support their research, 4% higher than the Russell Group average.
- 99% of students felt that the supervisory support and guidance was available to complete their research degree.
- MVLS research students rated a 'suitable working space' and the ability to 'access necessary equipment' at 5% and 4% higher than the Russell Group averages respectively.
- In addition MVLS students rated their opportunity for the further development of research and transferable skills at a higher average than their Russell Group peers.
Commenting on the results, Professor Mandy MacLean, Dean of Graduate Studies said, "We are delighted to have received such positive results from our students. It illustrates that as well as carrying out ground breaking research, our academics are working hard to provide an excellent research environment for students".

Postgraduate students wishing to undertake research within the College, have a range of full and part time study options available:
- PhD (Doctor of Philosophy): three to four years full-time or six years part-time study;
- MD: two years of full time study or four years of part time study (for medically-qualified graduates only);
- MSc (Master of Science) by Research: one year full-time or two years part-time study;
The normal standard of admission for a research student is a good First Class or Upper Second Class honours degree (GPA 3.0 or above) (or Masters) in a relevant discipline.
