The
Country
The
Republic of the Uganda is located on the east of the continent, commonly known
as the Pearl of Africa. The southern part of the country surrounds the Lake
Victoria and it famously known for its lush and fertile landscape despite
its location on the Equator. Uganda
hosts over 50 languages and is divided into over 100 districts. Uganda’s
tourism is based on its many wild life reserves most famously for
Chimpanzees and Gorillas. Although, these themselves bring interest from
outsiders it is the Ugandan people who are the country’s greatest asset.
The Ugandan's hospitality, kindness and unshakable work ethic is what people find most impressive when visiting this
great country. The country is also known for its dictators and corrupt
government which lead to a host of NGOs working within the country to
promote Aids awareness, water and hygiene awareness, English teaching and
health awareness. Despite Uganda’s troubled past the majority of the
population embrace their local arts and tradition with gusto and huge
importance is placed on sport and school achievements.
Aims
of the Project
There
are five main aims:
1.
Promote water and hygiene sanitation in your local school and surrounding
community.
2.
Build a water tank for your local primary school.
3.
Protect a water source in the community.
4.
Promote the use and building of smokeless stoves within the community.
5.
Promote natural water purification using Moringa Seeds.
Details
of the Project
Project
training begins in early June and lasts for eight days, after
training volunteers move into a donated house from their rural community
and live there for six weeks. During the six weeks volunteers will
be expected to teach primary classes about water and sanitation through
songs, sports and games on a weekly basis. Also volunteers will work with
two separate engineers to build their tank and water source. During project
volunteers will also be promoting and building smokeless stoves around
their local community and setting up communities to support all the work
listed after project terminates.
During the volunteers times on project they will also be expected to
give adult education lessons about the work they are teaching in school to
their local community. During project there is weekly check up with the NGO
and a mid-placement afternoon for feedback and questions. Debrief from
project happens late July. This takes one day and includes feedback and
discussion with the NGO.
Costs
Project
costs to be fundraised per volunteer are approximately £700.
Flights to Uganda vary dependant on airline, budget airline flights e.g.
Ethiopian Airlines cost around £500. Injections are around £150 and
insurance about £60-80.
Volunteers
The
Uganda Project has many different aspects to it and due to its location and
construction work people with high drive and energy are key.
We are looking for 6 volunteers who have positive attitude toward
working hard, people who are organised, people who can take the innovative
without being told and people who are passionate about development work.
Also, due to close living conditions we are looking for people who work
well within a team environment.
