Project E-mail: sva_southafrica@hotmail.co.uk
The Country
The project operates in the Venda region
of South Africa. Venda is in the north-east of the South Africa in the
Limpopo province, not far from the borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe. It
is a former homeland and is a culturally rich and exciting area of Africa,
home to the vha-Venda people.
Aims of the Project
1. Teaching within:
Jumbo progressed combined School
(Nursery and Primary)
Vhutshilo Mountain School (Nursery and Lower Primary)
Humbelani Sec School (Secondary School)
During the 8 week project, the main
teaching work of the volunteers is within Jumbo Progressed Combined School
situated in Phiphidi. It is an independent school
which provides a primary education for local children. Unfortunately, the
school does not have many resources, therefore any skills or attributes we
can offer are warmly welcomed. Last year we taught subjects such as
English, maths, politics, human rights, science,
art, drama, dance and sports. We hope for next year’s volunteers to have
new and exciting ideas and techniques to help supplement the children’s
education. Volunteers will have the chance to construct and execute their
own lesson plans and will be encouraged to teach their own interests and
skills as an individual or in pairs.
2. Raising HIV/AIDS awareness through:
Vhutshilo Mountain School ARV drama workshops
Lovelife HIV Initiative program
HIV/AIDS is a huge problem in South
Africa. Volunteers last year helped facilitate HIV drama workshops in Vhutshilo Mountain School. We hope to continue this
outreach program next year. The 'Lovelife'
program involves volunteers travelling to schools throughout the local area
and coordinating HIV/AIDS awareness lessons.
Our new NGO this year is Vhutshilo Mountain School in Tshikombani,
which provides children ages 2 to 8 with personal care, nutrition and an
education.
3. Helping the community by:
Volunteering with Thoyhoyandou Victim Empowerment program(TVEP).
TVEP provides support and advocacy to women and children survivors of
sexual abuse and domestic violence.
Details of the Project
The project runs for 8 weeks,
normally between the months July and September. Volunteers will be
expected to be working at least five days of a week and may also be
required on some weekends. Past volunteers have been fortunate enough to
travel before/after the project and past volunteers have been to places
such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and even Mozambique.
Costs
Fundraising is largely regarded as
a team effort, with a total target of approximately £6000, however
volunteers will be asked to organise an
individual attempt which should aim to raise £200. Injections will cost
roughly £150, obviously subject to individual clinic prices. Flights, based
on last year, were approximately £600 and volunteers are advised to have at
least £500 available for individual expenses.
Don't let the price put you off,
fundraising is great fun and can be hugely successful. Last year SVA raised over £70,000 so it can be done!
Volunteers
We are looking for 8 volunteers
who are committed and enthusiastic, easy-going, good at working in a team
and eager to embark on an adventure and take on a challenge.
