Campaigns

In 1982 Roy Jenkins took Glasgow Hillhead (the seat that Glasgow University was then in) from the Conservatives in a spectacular by-election victory. Five years later the Alliance lost Hillhead to a young(ish) George Galloway. Since then Gorgeous George has gone South, the seat has been renamed to Glasgow North and it's boundaries have been changed, helping to cut the Labour majority.

More than twenty years after Roy Jenkins's historic victory the Liberal Democrats are back in contention in the Glasgow University seat. GULD will be working hard over the next few years to ensure that Glasgow North once again sends a Liberal Democrat MP to Westminster.

As a preliminary to this and of scarcely less importance, GULD will be campaigning to get a Lib Dem MSP elected in Glasgow Kelvin and and an increased number of Lib Dem councillors elected across Glasgow in 2007. The 2007 council elections will be the first to be conducted using Single Transferrable Vote and as such present a significant opportunity for the Liberal Democrats to expand their power base in the city.
