02/02/11

Hi again everyone,

Sami and I have talked to one or two people about the planned trip and there has been lots of discussion about where to visit, so now we now have a finalised list of places. The main changes are basically that we have been informed by Professor Driscoll that both the Aberlemno stones and the Glamis stone are tucked up in wooden boxes for the winter, so there wouldn’t be much for us to see if we stopped at them which is a shame, but hopefully our planned stops make up for this loss.
Leaving from the Gregory Building at 9am we will be driving up to Perthshire. The first stop is going to be Inchtuthil Roman Fort. We’ll probably spend half an hour to an hour there before heading off on an adventure to try and locate Kinclaven castle, the ruins of which apparently stand is some woods next to the road. After that we’ll be making a quick stop at the Eassie stone, a nice Pictish stone in a glass box in a churchyard. The next stop will be the Brown and White Caterthuns, a couple of hillforts which we get to climb up and have a look at. The final destination on our list is one which we will only visit if either we make really good time, or if it’s absolutely pouring and no one feels like climbing a hillfort, and that is Brechin Cathedral. This cathedral houses a couple of nice examples of pictish stones and also has a 12th century round tower which is apparently quite rare. As I said, however, this is only if we have time or if we get rained off from other sites.
Once we have observed Perthshire’s archaeology to our satisfaction we will hopefully be starting our return journey by 5pm at the latest and arriving in Glasgow for about 7pm. Certainly no later than 8pm. Once we get back I know a couple of us are going to the pub, so anyone else is free to come with us to discuss the days journey and have a few pints. Sami should have a more detailed itinerary on the day for everyone to enjoy.
The signup sheet is up and ready for people to start adding their names to, and as mentioned before, there are only 15 slots, including the drivers, so you need to get your name up there fast to make sure you get a place on the trip. It costs £5 per person which you can just bring along on the day, and also don’t forget warm, waterproof clothes, proper boots for climbing those hillforts and your lunch so you don’t waste away.

See you there,
Kenny.

31/01/11

Hi everybody,

The Perthshire fieldtrip has been rescheduled for Saturday the 12th of February, so look out for a signup sheet appearing on the archaeology notice boards on the ground floor of the Gregory building this week (likely to be Wednesday afternoon because I'm in uni that day). Attendance costs £5 payable on the day, so sign up quickly so as to avoid disappointment and don't forget your fiver.
We will be leaving from outside the Gregory Building at approximately 9am and visiting several sites in Perthshire, likely sites being Inchtuthil Roman Fort, the Brown and White Caterthuns (or at least one of them), the Glamis Manse cross slab, possibly the Aberlemno Stones, and quite possibly Kinclaven Castle if we can find it, simply because Sami feels like climbing over a fence, although actual sites visited may be subject to change depending on timing and whether we can actually find them...
Bring a packed lunch and whatever snacks you want for the day because I don't think we have any stops scheduled in civilised areas where food can be purchased. Also remember the weather. It's wet and dreary this time of year so bring enough clothes to stay warm and dry and make sure you have proper shoes on like a big stomping pair of boots because we might have some cross country walking to do to get to a couple of the sites.
We hope to be arriving back at the university for around 5pm at which point it is highly likely that we'll go to Tennent's or somewhere for dinner and heavy drinking, so keep your eyes peeled for the signup sheet, it's bound to be a great day no matter what! If anyone has any questions regarding the trip or just the society in general don't hesitate to get in touch with me, Sami, Natalia or anyone you recognise from the society either in person or by emailing gu_archsoc@hotmail.com.

See you all there,
Kenny.

17/01/11

The New Year has arrived and with it comes a whole host of ArchSoc things for you lot to enjoy! Yeah! Here we go:
Wednesday 19th January - As usual there is the departmental seminar that everyone is welcome to come along to. Bring yourselves, bring your buddies, it's going to be amazing and I'll tell you why, because this week's seminar is going to be on the Lewis Chessmen and will be given by Mark Hall of the Perth Museums Service. For a full list of seminars this semester go to this link.
Also Wednesday 19th January - After the seminar the ArchSoc will then be meeting at around 6:00 to 6:30pm for a pub quiz in the Conference Room of the Greg. I have been assured that not all the questions will be archaeology based, so we might be in with a chance of answering some of them. Come along for some drinks, answer some questions, I have no idea if there will be prizes or anything, but who cares? You get to be with us for the whole evening! I can't tell you when it will end, but I don't imagine it'll be much later than about nine, half nine-ish, and we'll most likely go to Tennent's afterwards as well.
Thursday 20th January - We're going to be serving tea, coffee, biscuits and that sort of thing to members of the Glasgow Archaeology Society (the grown up one) in order to achieve profit. This will take place in the foyer of the Greg from around half past 6, I think. Natalia has the details so get in touch if you want to know more or if you would like to be a volunteer! We actually had a really nice chat with some of the GAS members the last time we did this, so I recommend it.
After tea and coffee, GAS will be holding their monthly lecture in the Boyd Orr building, lecture theatre 2, from 7:30pm. This month's lecture is, as far as I can tell, identical to the departmental seminar the day before, on the subject of the Lewis Chessmen and presented by Mark Hall. Attendance is free and open to all so if you miss the one you have the unique opportunity to attend the other!
Wednesday 26th January - Film Night! Everyone's favourite Wednesday of the month returns, and this time we're going to be watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Obviously it's difficult to say how this film will stand up to the immense popularity of the Omen at the last film night, but you should come along anyway. Cheap beer, inane discussion, probably really annoying and endless dialogue quotation followed by a good old fashioned pub session all in the company of your favourite degenerate archaeology students. This popular event is always, well, popular, so make sure you get in early for the experience of your life! As usual we will be meeting in the Gregory building Conference Room (room 320) at around 6pm.
Future events - We're working on the field trip. It's annoying that it had to be cancelled last time but honestly, we really want to take you to Perth! It's probably going to happen in the next couple of weeks depending on when we can get drivers and the minibus hired, so watch out. We will keep you all informed of progress as it happens. We also probably need to have a boring normal committee meeting since it's a new term to discuss boring important matters like money and organisation and stuff you want us to be doing, so I'll see about getting something organised with the relevant people. Probably in a pub to make it as harmless and easy as possible.
So that's it! I know a couple of these events are super-short notice but at least that means you have less time to wait for all the fun! Remember to check things like the ArchSoc Facebook page and Moodle for updates as well as right here on the proper webpage. Hope to see you all at something in the coming weeks.
Kenny.

15/11/10

It's time for some ArchSoc news! It has been a while since we treated you to an update.
Three main points to cover. First, The date of the field trip to the Perthshire area has been settled as Saturday the 4th of December. We're still ironing out the final details of the trip but I believe it's going to cost each traveller in the region of £5. We should be leaving at 9am from outside the greg and probably be returning to glasgow at about 4pm or 5pm. Hopefully we'll get a few sites in before it's too dark to see... Sign up sheet for those interested in coming will be appearing somewhere in the Gregory building soon. I'll make sure everyone knows about it when the time comes.
Second point! We might need one or two volunteers to help out on Thursday. We're going to be in the Greg from around 5 or 6pm providing tea, coffee and biscuits etc to Glasgow Archaeology Society before their lecture in the Boyd Orr at 7.30pm as a fundraiser for our society. As this one is just a tester to see how succesfull the idea is, I don't think we'll be looking for any baking from you lot this time, but if it proves popular then we might need you to make us cakes in the future! Contact me, Sami or Natalia if you can help out. We really only need one or two people though, so don't fret over it.
Final point is this; this month's film night has been set and the film chosen. On Wednesday the 24th of November we will be gathering in the Conference Room (320, remember) at 6pm to watch The Omen. This will work the same way as last time with drink being provided for a small sum of money and after the film we'll go to the pub. Hope to see people there!
I know this is a really heavy time of the year as far as uni work and for some people exams and stuff is going, but come on, you can afford a couple of evenings off to join in with the ArchSoc fun!
See you around, Kenny.

22/10/10

Wednesday's AGM meeting went well with a full committee being elected properly and very democratically indeed. There was no cheating at all. Here is the full list of committee members for the next year of ArchSoc:

President: Kenneth Green
Secretary: Sami Harju
Treasurer: Fiona Watson
Events Coordinator: Natalia Bain
Ordinary Members: Jos Vickers, Lauren Sieber, Kieran Grant, Matt Tomlinson, Povilas Jauga (PAUL!), Marco Petermann.

We should have a pretty good year ahead with lots of activities and exciting things to do, so make sure you come along to some of our future events! The next big thing is the film night on Wednesday the 27th of October, so come along and watch Stargate (Stop groaning, it’s a good film!). We’ll have some beer for you to buy at a reasonable price and we’ll go to the pub afterwards, so it’ll be great.
See you all there!
Kenny.

06/10/10

Hello folks,
Good news! We have a date for the AGM. We will be meeting in the usual place, Conference Room 320 in the Gregory Building at 6pm on Wednesday the 20th of October. During this meeting we will need to elect a committee including the president, secretary, treasurer and events coordinator. There are also a couple of ordinary members positions on the committee for anyone who is interested in the running of the society without actually having to do any real work.
At the AGM we will also hopefully be able to tell you about the forthcoming trip we are starting to organise, as well as future film nights and other such events. It's also a great time for you, the members of the society, to tell us about what you would like to see happening over the course of the year.
Finally, if you or anyone who is interested in joining the society, but has not yet done this, the AGM is a great time to do so. So come along with your 3 pound membership fee, join us and we'll have a great year.
Hope to see you all there, 6pm in the Conference Room of the Greg on Wednesday the 20th!
Kenny

05/10/10

Hello everyone,
We'd just like to make sure that everybody knows about the archaeology seminars that take place every Wednesday from 4pm until half past five in Lecture Theatre room 109 of the Gregory which are starting this week (Wednesday the 6th). There's a list up in the archaeology corridor of who is talking about what each week (also available online HERE), so make sure you have a look and go along to any that you like the look of.
As well as just being a sort of general seminar plug, we'd also like to draw your attention to next week's seminar on Wednesday the 13th of October, given by Peta Glew. The subject is going to be the survey carried out last year at Cathcart Old Parish Church by a number of students in the society, which Peta was basically the all powerful overlord of.
We recommend you come along to the seminar just because it might give you an idea of the sort of fieldwork that we were able to carry out last year with the society and what we might possibly be able to organise again in the future if you're all very well behaved.
Also of possible interest to archaeology students at the university is the seminar on October the 27th given by Dr Campbell and Professor Driscoll about the progress of the SERF project which many of us have taken part in and many others may be taking part in sometime in the future as it serves as the university's fieldschool for all students between 2nd and 3rd year. And yes of course, all the other seminars as well. Some might be of interest, some might not be your cup of tea at all. There's no obligation to go to any or all of them, but sometimes you might just want to.
Also, I suppose I had better just give everyone a quick update with regards to our next event. Basically, we're working on it. Expect dates and times in hopefully the next few days. The AGM will probably be mid to late October at the moment, and we also plan to have another film night towards the end of the month. Nothing is certain yet, though. Just hold your horses.
Kenny

Three cheers, the new website is up and running. This is the number one place to consult for all the best information regarding the Glasgow University Archaeology Society. Announcements for trips, events and other society shenanigans will be found here, so get it bookmarked quickly.
Hopefully over the coming weeks and months we'll have lots of stuff organised for you to come and take part in! As for just now, check the events page for details of our first event, the Indiana Jones film night! Kenny.
