Correspondence

  • We had another e-mail from Tim Shand. The SRC now have our e-mail address.
  • Someone e-mailed to ask whether we had outings to go and see shows.
  • Paul Sloan would like to MD Sweeney Todd (Sondheim) or Kiss of the Spider Woman (Kander and Ebb).
  • John Paul has suggested that:
    • as a last resort, we promote an ordinary honorary member to the post of president;
    • we link synopses of shows on the website from the past productions page;
    • when choosing a show we note the reasons for and against to prevent having the same discussion every year. It was pointed out that this is to an extent recorded in the minutes and also that the society's circumstances change.
  • A girl called Debbie Reynolds e-mailed Ewan to say that she wishes to join and should be here tonight.
  • Nicola has requested that the band parts be sent out in early December. Anne says she probably won't need them before January.
  • We will definitely be taking part in the Wind Band concert on 11th December.
  • Childline asked us to remember to send them publicity material for the show, because several people in their office wanted to come last year but didn't know when it was: they will also put flyers on the seats for us in the City Chambers.
  • The QM now has everything it needs for our affiliation application. We should find out whether or not we can also affiliate to the GUU, although most people thought this would not be possible.
  • The Bugsy Malone flats have been returned to the Kilmardinny Players, along with the phone box, which they plan to utilise as a bay window.

Freshers' Events Post-Mortem

The John Mac hall was a bad place to be, but we have written to the SRC already. We had 500 posters, with plenty left and 2000 flyers, which was about right. We should make a big banner with the society's logo. Everyone had fun at the weekend show, but it is important to note that it was particularly suited to the structure of Bugsy and that other shows may not work so well. We need to be aware of one person taking on too much work and that 'lack of communication' can be responsible for many problems. It was felt that individual's roles needed to be better defined, and that more could have been prepared before hand. It would be useful to have more 'spare bodies' to deal specifically with emergent problems. Gregor said that he felt the ticket price was needlessly low and it was agreed that more discussion was needed. The costumes need cleaned at some point, but we will wait until we know what is needed for Anything Goes. It was pointed out several times that the above comments were not criticisms of Bugsy, but areas we could improve on even more were we to repeat the exercise.

Christmas Events

  • Ewan and Nicky had a meeting with Linzi Davidson from Childline. The concert will start at 7pm and they will do their best to make sure people turn up on time. They will also try to organise the seating better so that we can have seats for the second half of the concert. We will have the back page of the programme again, which may be slightly fancier this year. Concern was expressed on both sides about the amount of free wine drunk by members of the society last year before the concert had even ended.
  • We would like our end of term event to be a murder mystery evening in the GUU Reading Room, preferably on Saturday 9th December. Sam expressed an interest in running it, given his experience with role-playing events. A subcommittee was established to deal with the event, comprising Sam, Laura and Karen.

Anything Goes

We now have all the necessary materials. Next week's rehearsal will be in the Food Factory. We need a budget soon, and so will have the budget meeting at 5.30pm next week with no other committee business - that being dealt with at a separate meeting the night before. Mark has two candidates for the position of assistant director, but needs to speak to them both tonight before announcing his decision. It was announced in the course of rehearsal that the position is to be filled by Laura Johnstone. The auditions are this Sunday - Ian will be the impartial committee member on the panel. We also need to ratify the show, and so will call an EGM for Thursday 9th November, QM Committee Room 1, 7pm.

AOCB

  • The Hallowe'en Party will be at Anne's flat tomorrow night from 8pm. Mark has printed scary flyers.

Next Meeting

Committee Business - Wednesday 1st November, 7pm Western Court.
Anything Goes Budget Meeting - Thursday 2nd November, 7pm, QM.
