Coastal Zone Management

Graduate or Continuing Professional Development course

21–28 July 2013

(including days of arrival and departure)

This course is an intensive introduction to the principles and practices of coastal zone management, with specific reference to coastal zone issues in the UK, and in particular in Scotland. It is pitched at immediate postgraduate/Masters student level, but is also intended as a continuing professional development course suitable for professional environmental managers and consultants. It will also be suitable as a final year undergraduate module for specialist students, or as a continuing education course for others with relevant interests.

The course is held at Millport, on the Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland, at the University Marine Biological Station, an institution of the University of London. The course is sponsored by Birkbeck, University of London, and run with support from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). The course includes talks by UMBSM staff and guest speakers, visits to local sites in the estuary and Firth of Clyde to examine coastal management issues, a seabed survey from a modern research vessel and visits to relevant institutions, such as the offices of SEPA.

Students with working experience or knowledge of terrestrial environmental management will find the course an appropriate introduction to management issues on the coast, while students who are or have studied marine biology will find the course introduces them to the real problems of managing marine resources in coastal areas.
