University Marine Biological Station Millport
The area around the Station is particularly rich in species, which apart from extreme southern and northern forms, comprises the greater part of the British marine fauna and flora. Owing to the sheltered conditions which prevail within the Clyde Sea area, the fauna is accessible throughout the year. Special mention might be made of the echinoderms Antedon spp. and Psammechinus miliaris, the hermit crab, Pagurus prideauxi together with its commensal anemone, Adamsia palliata sea pens, Pennatula phosphorea and Virgularia mirabilis, and bivalves, such as the nest builder Limaria hians.
Because of this, UMBSM is the largest supplier of marine plants and animals in Britain. Both living and preserved material can be supplied both nationally and internationally. In addition to teaching material for universities, colleges and schools, specimens can be provided for filming and research.
A list of the more-common species that can be supplied is available from Mrs Diane Robertson <email@example.com>. Enquiries about rarer species are welcomed.
