Network access

UMBSM has a limited number of workstations with internet access, but an increasing number of visitors are bringing laptops with them and making use of our wireless network. UMBSM has internet access through the systems of the University of Glasgow, which supports ‘eduroam’ network access via the JANET Roaming Service (JRS). Eduroam enables users to visit other participating institutions and gain access to the internet without having to register for another username and password.

If your home organisation has registered with the JRS, you will be able to gain access to the internet at UMBSM using the eduroam ID and password issued by your home organisation. This means you do not have to register for another user name and password with us here at UMBSM, so you can have immediate access to the internet.

We suggest you take the following steps:

  1. Find out if your home organisation is registered with the JRS by checking the list of JANET Roaming Participants
  2. If it is, check with your local IT department for the steps needed to access the network (N.B. you may need to register individually with your own institution for eduroam)
  3. Lastly, check the Information for Visitors from the IT Services Department of the University of Glasgow for details of how to configure your wireless network connection.

If your home institution does not participate in the JRS, you might wish to encourage it to do so; however, in the meantime we may still be able to issue you with a temporary login.
