Good news: marine science at Millport is to continue
Agreement between University of London and Field Studies Council
On 1 January 2014, ownership of the Marine Biological Station at Millport will transfer from the University of London to the Field Studies Council (FSC), a charity dedicated to providing environmental education.
The Trustees of the University of London and of the FSC have recently agreed a Memorandum of Understanding setting out their agreement to transfer the ownership of the physical assets of the Station including land, buildings and other facilities from the University to FSC.
This means that Millport will be open for business next year, offering facilities for fieldwork at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and developing its provision through the FSC's expertise in residential and day field courses in environmental sciences of all sorts.
The FSC is well placed to inherit and develop Millport. As a high quality environmental education provider, the charity operates 17 Centres across the UK, welcoming over 130,000 people in 2012, including undergraduates from 180 separate groups representing over 80 universities. FSC also has 27 university customers bringing postgraduate courses to its centres.
Both the FSC and the University will be posting further details of the new arrangements at intervals through the next few months on their websites.
We are grateful to North Ayrshire Council for their invaluable help and support in securing a future for the Station.
